Introduction to Community Work Policy and Practice

This program will provide an introduction to contemporary community work policy and practice, and is suitable for anyone with limited experience interested in working with communities (in both paid and unpaid positions). At the conclusion of this course students should be able to:
- understand the historical context of contemporary community work practice
- describe the policy context of contemporary community work practice
- critically reflect on the community work practice in the current context.
Students will be encouraged to engage with some of the key debates in working with communities, and class meetings will be structured to facilitate discussion.
The course will explore questions including:
- What is community work?
- What theoretical frameworks underpin community work?
- How have the different approaches to working with communities developed?
- What are the strengths and limitations of these different approaches?
- Is community empowerment possible in a context dominated by neo-liberalism and manageralism?
