Themes

The certificate of middle-years mathematics education has been developed to support primary and secondary school teachers in the implementation of the Mathematics K–6 Syllabus and the Mathematics years 7–10 Syllabus and to develop teachers’ knowledge and understanding of the teaching and learning of mathematics with a focus on years 5–8. Each session will blend theory and practice and will include a summary of relevant research as well as syllabus implementation advice. Participants will be provided with readings for each session, and will be encouraged to reflect on their practice throughout the program.

Issues in middle schooling will be explored including engagement and motivation, transition, assessment and reporting, problem solving, technology, catering for diverse learning needs, and numeracy across the curriculum.

There will also be a focus on content areas that have been identified as presenting a particular challenge to students, eg, fractions and decimals, patterns and algebra, and chance and probability.
