The Social Futures conference will provide an opportunity for policy-makers and professionals at the cutting edge of developing joined-up practice for education and social policy to engage with leading international thinkers in this field.
Education policy is increasingly being understood within a broader frame of reference which puts emphasis on the joining up of policy and practice around children's services, family well-being and social and economic futures. There is greater recognition of the need for strategic longer-term perspectives for policy and leadership that move outside traditional policy silos. The OECD, for example, has highlighted the multidimensional significance of educational futures in terms of,
- how educational systems reflect the social and cultural traditions and the economic dynamics;
- the increasing importance of lifelong learning and the role of education as a gateway to employment;
- the significance of the quality of teaching as a determinant of student learning;
- the role of educational equity in advancing social inclusion; and,
- the enhancement of the responsiveness of tertiary education to the needs of the knowledge economy.
Focusing upon the connectedness of policy in these areas also requires new thinking about the nature of decision-making itself and the development of knowledge management that supports long-term planning.
