Teaching Reading Within a Balanced Literacy Program

Friday 1 June 2007

 classroom

Overview

Primary teachers spend a lot of time and energy helping students to become readers. While they may feel reassured by students’ progress most of the time, they can still find themselves facing niggling doubts and concerns about their efficacy.

Teaching Reading Within a Balanced Literacy Program invites participants to reflect on current practices: to question why they do what they do and to see how they can reinvigorate the teaching of reading within an integrated program.

During the workshop, participants will:

  • identify critical ingredients in a successful literacy program
  • discuss organisational strategies and links with integrated units
  • focus on guided reading
  • explore the notion of literacy centres and independent literacy activities.
