Certificate in Teaching Science for Deeper Understanding - Stages 4 & 5

Program Overview

 

Venue: Education Building, Manning Road, the University of Sydney, Camperdown

This comprehensive program will examine and develop scientific content, contexts and pedagogy in the context of the NSW Years 7 to 10 science syllabus. Participants will:

  • explore what the experts say
  • help make science lessons relevant and current for teenagers today
  • investigate learning styles of students
  • investigate teaching approaches that extend all students to their maximum potential
  • develop ideas for integrating science into a wider curriculum, and
  • develop rich tasks and assessment strategies.

The course will include formal presentations and practical workshops with opportunities for discussion.

Who's it for?

 

Secondary school science teachers who are working with students in Years 7 to 10, who would like to explore issues in junior secondary school science education.

We will seek to extend background knowledge and look at strategies for managing the current syllabus. The Certificate will explore implications for practice and provide participants with an opportunity to join a community of learners reflecting on their practice and planning to support and challenge middle school students.

Maximum number of participants for this course is 25.

Fees per person, GST inclusive (includes lunch, morning tea, and materials)
Certificate (Conference + 6 evening workshops) - Single rate $780
Certificate - Group rate (2 or more people from the same school) $750
Conference only $180
Individual evening workshops $105 each

Assessment, Awards & Accreditation

 

Participants may choose to attend any or all of the sessions.

However, to receive the Certificate in Teaching Science for Deeper Understanding – Stages 4 and 5, full attendance at the conference and all six evening workshops, and active participation is required.

Completion of the full Certificate program, and the successful submission of two additional assessment tasks* can be accredited as one Unit of Study towards the Faculty’s Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Master of Education awards.

Evening workshops will include guest experts, reviews of relevant research and teaching ideas including the use of technology, all referenced to the Stage 4–5 science syllabus.

Academic Coordinator

 

Alexandra Hugman is a joint appointment between the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney. She has worked in science education as a secondary teacher and university lecturer and has actively contributed to the professional development of secondary teachers through workshop presentations and journal articles in the UK and Australia. Alexandra is also Director of UniServe Science, an online resource for science teachers.
