The Workshops

Together these workshops will involve a critical investigation of digital literacies, multimodal digital authoring and new forms of social networking, covering the upper years of primary schooling to the HSC years. The program is designed to provide sufficient time for experimentation with materials and ideas in between workshops.

Participants may undertake any of these workshops individually as non-award study, or attend any four of the five listed to receive the 'Certificate in Digital Literacies'. Maximum class size for each workshop is 10 participants.

Introduction to Education in a Virtual World

Choice of three dates (10am-4:30pm):

Second Life® is a 3D virtual world, which educators all over the world are using to explore and imagine new ways of teaching and learning. As well as the convenience of being a space for eLearning, it is an imaginative, playful space where students enjoy experiencing new ways of looking at issues, new ways of participating in educational contexts, and where students are learning to network, contribute and teach others.

Second Life is a space that offers opportunities for students to explore larger themes of digital culture, gender, identity, race, business and economics. Feedback from past participants reveals that many of them see their experiences inside Second Life as transformative–completely changing their perspectives about teaching and education, and inspiring them to be the kind of teacher that can lead their students successfully into an unknown future.

This one day workshop will include a general introduction to the kinds of educational experiences being offered currently in Second Life. It will include time to construct an avatar and explore the space, learning basic skills from moving about to taking photographs inside the world. This day will also focus on the ways we might manage and work in a virtual classroom, and discuss the kinds of skills needed by 21st century educators in virtual worlds.

Exploring Shakespeare and Literary Worlds in Second Life

Second Life® offers a way to explore the potential of online media to breathe life into old texts, taking classic narratives to new realms of possibility with diverse, unexpected and educational outcomes–off the page onto the virtual stage! Second Life is an appropriate, timely use of pop culture as an adaptive bridge between classic texts and new media technology.

In this one day workshop, participants will literally walk into the worlds of literary works such as Shakespeare's Macbeth and Dante's Inferno. The poetic use of metaphor, image and symbol that permeate Shakespeare and Dante's language are brought to 3D life using the online world as a discursive design space where visitors experience the motivations and emotional journey of characters, and explore and make personal sense of universal literary themes and devices.

Introduction to Multimedia Storytelling and Machinima Making (using Kahootz)

Choice of three dates (10am-4:30pm):

  • Thursday 26 February
  • Saturday 1 August
  • Thursday 15 October

This one day workshop will first look at multimedia storytelling in general, with an introduction taken from the ABC television series Noah and Saskia. Participants will watch a number of machinima (movies using 3D gaming software) from a range of sources such as Second Life and Kahootz. Examples of classroom-produced machinima will be viewed and discussed within the context of multimedia authoring pedagogy.

Participants will then undertake a series of self-paced tutorials using Kahootz, scaffolded by instructor assistance. All participants will make their own experimental machinima by the end of the day.

Second Life storyteller
Using Blogs and Wikis in the Classroom

Choice of three dates (10am-4:30pm):

  • Friday 27 February
  • Saturday 26 September
  • Friday 16 October

This one day workshop will commence with an overview of the range of uses teachers have made of blogs and wikis in their classrooms. All participants will join a wiki and experiment with its use, and learn how to upload images, videos and other media into a wiki. All participants will also join a blog and experiment with its use. Participants will then select to make either a wiki or a blog, and spend time working on the information architecture so that it is all ready to be used for an educational purpose of their choice.

Digital Fiction  

Saturday 28 March 10am-4:30pm

This one day workshop will explore the many wonderful examples of digital fiction being used in classrooms to supplement the range of literary texts used in English classes. A particular focus will be the award winning Inanimate Alice.

We will discuss multimodality, interactivity and issues of identity as we walk through the many ways young people are creating new online stories, literary worlds and literary fan-based communities.

Participants will also have the opportunity to explore and evaluate a range of free online story making tools. By the end of the day all students will choose one tool and experiment with making their own multimodal stories.

Assessment & Accreditation

Participants may undertake any of these workshops individually as non-award study. To receive the 'Certificate in Digital Literacies' you must attend, and actively participate in, any four of the five workshops listed.

If you successfully complete this certificate program, you then have the option of having it accredited as one unit of study towards a Graduate Certificate/Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies or Master of Education degree offered by the Faculty. This entails undertaking two assessment tasks and carries an additional fee for marking and administration. If interested, please discuss this option further with the Course Coordinator, .
