Leadership SPICE :: Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies

Flexible date and location

Overview

Leadership SPICE (Schools Projects In-service Certificate of Education) is designed to enable school leaders to further develop their skills and:

  • articulate a vision and create shared understanding of that vision among staff
  • provide intellectual stimulation and individual support for staff in the school
  • work innovatively in a dynamic and uncertain context
  • elevate quality in teaching and learning through innovation in curriculum and pedagogy
  • understand their own professional learning needs and the needs of others, and how to facilitate both, and
  • manage the school organisation efficiently and effectively.

Course Structure

Leadership SPICE is offered at two levels: Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma

The Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies program has five components:

1. Compulsory unit of study:

  • Action Research and Action Learning (EDPF5008)

2 & 3. Two units of study chosen from:

  • Organisational Culture and Change (EDPA5011)
  • Management and Leadership for the new Millenium (EDPA6015)
  • Curriculum Leadership (EDPF6016)
  • Evaluation of Educational Programs (EDPA5013)

4. Fourth unit of study:

  • Professional Learning Portfolio: Leadership (EDPZ6010)

In this subject you will undertake a minor innovation project developed in the school/college during second semester, and focused on professional workplace learning. This will include a series of syndicates (minimum of three) in which you will support and be supported by others in the course as you develop your innovation project, discuss the material covered in your other subject units, and discuss issues emerging out of your journal (see below).

5. Learning Journal

You are required to keep a journal of your experiences and how you are developing your understanding of leadership over the term of the course.

Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies

Once you have completed the Graduate Certificate requirements, you may wish to pursue a Graduate Diploma during which you will undertake a fully developed workplace innovation project.

This is a 12 credit point project (Dissertation EDPZ6720), and you will be expected to undertake six syndicates in which you will support and be supported by others in the course, as well as your tutor.

Course Delivery

Date and location of course delivery can be flexible—dependent on participants’ needs and the number of students enrolled. Ideal participation would consist of groups of 15 or more from the same institution or geographical location.

The attendance requirements are formal study schools of four days for each unit of study, led by staff from the University of Sydney; plus three meetings of your syndicate (organised by your tutor). These components are compulsory.

Units of study can be taken individually as non-award (unassessed and not accreditable) professional development modules – please contact the DPL for more information if interested
